Bridget Fidget

Have children's picture books lost the plot?

When I read this recent headline in the Independent on Sunday, I could
instantly feel my hackles rising. As a mum and as Editorial Director
of Picture Books at Puffin, I live and breathe pictures books, day in,
day out, and champion them at every single opportunity. They are a
source of inspiration and delight and a magical world of wonder.

I'm the first to admit that we are going through challenging times.
Yes, the market is tough. Yes, we do face challenges when booksellers
follow failsafe strategies (favourites piled high at the cost of new
talent) and yes I, like Michael Rosen, wonder how an education
strategy based on the teaching of synthetic phonetics will actually
foster any love of reading. But it's not all bad. In fact, I would say
that change is in the air. As the article concludes, all that is
needed is the next big thing, the next picture book phenomenon to reinvent the category . . .

BridgetI'd like you to meet Bridget. Bridget Fidget. The girl in a whirl who
just can't stay still. Bridget Fidget is a fabulous character by new
author/illustrator talent, Joe Berger, and she will make her first
appearance in bookshops this September. With all the energy of Eloise
and the elegance of Madeline, I think that she is the saviour that we
have all been waiting for.

And the good news is that Joe is not the only newcomer on the block.
We have signed up three brand new picture book author talents in the
last three months and that in itself is a phenomenon. Things at last, are on the up.

The end of an era? Have picture books lost the plot? No, not at all.
We just need to ride out the storm and watch this space.
